THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Recently I've been eating a lot of lamb. I like lamb because there's no pretending what it is. If a little kid asks you what veal is you can make up something - 'Uh, it's a cow that had nothing left to live for..." But there's no denying that lamb comes from baby sheep. Also, a lot of people say it's cruel to eat veal, but I actually think lamb is crueler. If a baby cow makes it to adulthood, he could still end up being turned into beef. But nobody eats mutton, which means if a lamb makes it past a certain point, he's home free. If I was a lamb on the verge of becoming a sheep, and I saw the butcher coming after me with that knife, I'd be like one of those old cops in the movies who gets shot right when they're about to retire: "But this was supposed to be my last day on the job!"
